I. School Background
Vientiane Ethnic School was established on April 24th, 1996, located at 13th Road, Viengsamhai Village, Vangvieng District, Vientiane Province. The school belongs to the Department of Education and Sports of Vientiane Province. There is a role to play in accepting the children of the ethnic people in the remote (rural) areas of the two provinces: Vientiane and Xaysomboun.
In terms of the organization of the boarding school, there are two principals and deputy principals, including Mr. Phonesavanh Sukanya as the school principal and Mr. Khankeo Khanty as the deputy principal; There are 5 units such as the Academic Unit, the Administration Unit, the Advisory Unit, the Student Affairs Activities Unit and the Information and Communication Technology Unit.
II. School Demographic Information
The school has a total of 58 teachers, 26 females; 4 administrative staff, 2 women, including 1 nurse, 2 Lao volunteer teachers, 1 female and 1 medical volunteer, 2 foreign volunteers, 1 female.
There are a total of 810 students, 295 females, consisting of 4 ethnic groups: Hmong 59%, Khmu 26%, Lao 12% and Ew-mien 3%. Students in the age group of 11-22 years old and all students stay in dormitories and have three meals a day at the rate of all meals are directly responsible from the Government of Laos.
The admission policy is based on the number of rates set by the Ministry of Education and Sports, and then the Department of Education and Sports distributes the numbers to each district in the two provinces.
III. Curriculum.
For the curriculum for teaching and learning, there are two systems: the general system of secondary education is taught from grade 1 to grade 7, and the basic vocational system teaches three subjects, such as electricity, tailoring and beauty.
Students also learn about growing vegetables and raising animals to practice learning skills to strengthen themselves.
IV. Recognition and Community
The Vientiane Ethnic School is one of the schools directly under the Government of the Lao PDR and is the center for the development of the general education and vocational education system in remote areas by accepting students from rural areas.
The school has been involved with the community as follows:
1. Have a cooperative relationship for the development of education with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)
2. Cooperate with the Confucius Institute at the National University for the development of education, especially Chinese language learning.
3. Liaised with organizations at all levels under the Party and Government of the Lao PDR, especially participation in social assistance such as blood donation and participation in sports, arts and sanitation activities.
